Hi guys and girls,
i'm looking over the next month to buy a graphics card. i need it for gameplay and for some very light and infrequent video editing. i've currently got a nvidia fx5200, pretty standard right?
I've got an asus k8v deluxe mboard running amd-64bit 3000+ with 512 ram.
I don't really want to spend more than £150 but could push a bit more to not have to upgrade so soon, plus windows coming with 64 bit os soon i hope so, wanna get the most outta my set-up.

Thanks.

oops forgot to add that i was considering the geforce fx5700 ultra, heard it good clock speed and generally good performance for the price.

Seen it for around £130.

Thanks again.

I wouldn't get anything less than an ATI 9800 Pro or GeforceFX 5900 Ultra if you go nvidia.

If you don't have enough money to get one of these two or better, then I suggest you wait some more until you have enough money.

ok thanks for the advice guys. i can see how the geforce 6600gt is a better card than the one i mentioned, but to be honest i'm not an expert but when i read the specs of the other cards compared tp the 5700 ultra. i don't see where they are better.
for example harrack52, whats so good about the ATI 9800 Pro and the same for the other card you both mentioned fx 5900.
Not trying to be rude but just wanna learn the reasons, you know educating one self.

Thanks for the time.

Basically better quality graphics and better performance. the 5700 wouldn't compare to the 9800pro because it will give you lower frame rates in games. This is because its got higher clock speeds and faster RAM and a more advanced GPU.

Actually the main reason why the 9800 Pro is so fast is because of its 256-bit memory bus.

There are other reasons. But if you want proof, look at some reviews and then you'll see for yourself.

hmm ok i see where you're coming from, but i think i'd have to go for the geforce 6600gt. Seems like a much better card and for not a lot more money compared to the 9800 pro.

Thanks guys.

I got an MSI FX5900 with VIVO for only $135 through newegg.com, since it was an open item. The pins weren't even scratched, so I'm pretty sure it was just purchased and immediately returned. It's pretty fantastic for OpenGL games, if that's your thing.

Yea generally nVidia cards perform better or just as well as ATi ones in OpenGL games like Jedi Knight. The Radeons > 9200 perform bettern with DirectX games ie. Unreal Tournament.
