Mains cable vs Cat5e / Cat6

Hi everyone,

I hope someone can answer my question, it is this: I have to install network cable in a new 2 story office, the cable will run in cable runs around the skirting and up through the cieling, unfortunatly these cable runs already have mains cable (for sockets around the room) in them.

I can't remember (from my cisco course) if these power cables will have any adverse effect on the signal of the cable ( i will not be using more than 60-70metre sections)

Would it be sensible to use more expensive sheilded of screened cat5e cable or will normal cable be fine?

Any thoughts are most welcome

The mains shouldn't present a problem to the cat cable, if any at all i would think it would be minimal.

As long as you don't run the cable longer than about 348ft and you take care not to run the cable parrallel with the power line, you shouldn't have any problems. Escpecially so if you run CAT6, since it resists interference much more effectively than CAT5. Also avoid running the cables too close to flourescent lighting if possible. Whatever you do, just wake sure not to take out too much twist when terminating your cable, or you won't get full bandwidth no matter how isolated the cable is.
