Major Upgrade, advice required please :D

Hello again, fellow hardware-forums-ers. I am upgrading my PC very soon, and no I do not want to buy a new system for anybody who thinks I should - I need this to last me until 2009/2010, then I will build a whole new one alltogether.

Anyway, my current PC specification is in my sig below. Pretty crap huh? well parts of it :D. The upgrades are as follows:

CPU: Athlon 64 3200+ >>> Athlon 64 X2 Dual core 4200+

RAM: 512MB in 2 Kingston Single Sided DIMMs each 256mb >>> Adding another 2GB in 2 Kingston Dual Sided DIMMs each 1GB.

Graphics: Built on GeForce 6150 up to 128MB RAM >>> GeForce 8800GTS 640MB ???

My Main concern is the physical size of an 8800GTS. They seem quite big and I am put off buying one due to a fairly small case. I took some measurements and took some pictures to help consider whether I should buy one or not.

1) From one side of my case to the other, near the hard drives rack (27cm)

So basically, will the 8800GTS fit? If anyone out there has one and knows/can find out the measurement of the card, that would be great.

My power supply is a 600Watts Thermaltake Toughpower, with 2 SLi PCI-e 6 pin connectors, and has 4 12v Rails and 48A total, 12A on each Rail and is more than capable for the job as a side note.

Any suggestions and help, greatly appreciated.

I recommend you get a 320mb + overclocked version of the 8800gts as it is better cheaper value for your money, and is the same if not higher performance as the 640mb.

yes it will fit in your case because the 8800gts is around 24 cm long max.
 
hmmm, i heard not to settle for less than 512mb of video memory, i intend to run games at 1280x1024 and maybe some AA and AF and i hope to run many games on highest settings. Are you sure I should go for a faster card with less vid mem?
 
right now, i reckon 256 is about right for the games now, before, 64mb used to be enough, just as long as the chipset is good. THATS WHAT COUNTS THE CHIP ON THE GRAPHICS CARD. Remember the geforce 6600GT? it's only 128mb, but it could run Doom3 at 1024x768 with the eye candy on no problem, also you can get a 512 graphics card, but if the chip is only , lets say, a 9200 radeon, what do you think the performance will be like? :doh: So overall, the 8800 is a good chip;) and the memory will not affect its performance. (you will also be able to run some AA and AF;) )
 
sounds cool, but I found one for £20 more and its 640mb &&&& its overclocked, an eVGA one if they are any good, its a "superclocked" one or so its called. Any good?
