recently switched to firefox, i think its a good browser. then, earlier, i tried to check for updates for XP (i have automatic updates turned off) when i was greeted by a message saying essential 'thanks, but if u want to update your XP you got to use IE'! isnt that just plain illegal????

Yes, it sucks, but I don't know of any other way. That's the only time I use IE myself.

[ot]No, it is not illegal and IMO should be posted in the War Zone.
MS are forcing you to use their own software.
    It makes sense to me....

If this sort of behaviour hinders your personal computing I would strongly recommend the oposition. You do not need a browser to update their OS.
It makes even more sense to me... :p

You could try doing it this way.

Go to - Control Panel – Security Center - Resources – “Check for the Lastest Updates from Windows Update."

This should get you to the site so that you can download any available updates. I just tried it as a test and it worked for me.

Or have a look at this site. I gave it a quick try, and it seemed to work, but I didn't download any updates.

[OT]I finally have a proper use for this smiley: :ff: , yay! [/OT]

Firefox can't be used to install updates without a 3rd party plug-in because it doesn't make use of ActiveX like IE does. Personally, i'd let Automatic Updates do it all for me.

Yes, its not illegal. The reason they do that is because the whole online update concept relies on having access to system files. That is only something ActiveX can do, and so only IE supports ActiveX. Just use IE for it, or use auto updates.

*Grins broadly and thumbs suspenders* :D Yes, that'd be me. But for the record, I am actually Microsoft trained and certified, and I have years under my belt supporting Windows in a professional envorinment. (That's probably why I love Linux so much! I know Windows all too well!) [/ot]
