you shouldn't have to do that, what is the make and model of your modem, are there any errors in any of the system logs, and how long ago did you last scan for viruses & spyware (in safe mode)

Edit: do you get any error messages

no error messages atall its a scientific-atlanta WEBSTAR epc2100 series.

i also have to disconect the power when pc is off for my xbox to log in to live. then when finished have to replug to go back on the net i dont have a router yet to get both on at same time.

not done a scan in safe mode

how is it connected
  • USB
  • Ethernet
  • Both
cos it has issues with some chipsets, usually the USB drivers crash the comp completely (usually Dells), rather than an intermittent connection[ot]you are doing a more thorough scan in safe mode as if files are being used they can't be scanned, update spyware & virus database then reboot to safe mode, also do scandisk & defrag in safe mode for the same reason[/ot]

no wonder your having problems, it's much much easier to manage an Ethernet connection for all devices, just throw a cheap NIC at your system[ot]USB connections are v v difficult to configure[/ot]
