My Hard Drive Failed A Seatools "long Generic" Scan. How Likely Is It To Be Failing?

Almost any cage that can handle at least two drives and supports RAID 1 is good enough. There are endless possibilities and I cannot recommend anything spesific. For HDD's, usually any regular SATA drive will fit on those SATA HDD racks. For RAID 1, two drives of same type and size of course.

But what about the reports of people running the risk of losing their data due to problems with RAID 1 enclosures. For example this enclosure:

http://www.amazon.com/Vantec-3-5-Inch-External-Enclosure-NST-400MX-S3R/dp/B0089V4WOC/

...has a review that states:

Mechanical design is excellent. It's sturdy without being excessively heavy.

Electronics, not so much. One reviewer said it's not USB 2.0 compatible. Not true. The actual problem has nothing to do with the interface. Despite having set the configuration for individual drives, Vantec is doing something odd in the drive initialization; either drive, placed in a separate dock, appears uninitialized, but in the Vantec appears initialized. This is a very negative issue, since in the event of a failure of the box, unless I can get another identical to it, my data will be unrecoverable.

Strange. Because both drives contain same data, just taking out working HDD and putting it to any other enclosure or computer SATA connector, data should be readable. For RAID 1 box should just write same data to both HDD and that's it.

Do you know of any in particular that you know to be reliable, and are affordable (under $100)?

No, sorry. I cannot even remember what box I have myself. Simple box that does the job. Those boxes are quite simple when using RAID 1 so there should not be many issues.

I have to go now, back tomorrow if you have more questions.
