Need help ! PC Freezes !

I have a problem with a P4 1.7GHZ PC. When WIN XP starts after about 5 mins the computer freezes. It does not respond to either keyboard or mouse. I suspected that it had some kind of virus and it was about time this system needed a format and a re installation of XP.

Booting from the XP cd and starting setup the same thing happens after 5mins. It freezes again. Im suspecting its an hdd problem. There are no beeps during the post either.

Any suggestions ?

You should run memtest to make sure that your RAM is ok, you can get a iso from THIS page (You want to download "Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)")

you will need to do it from another computer, if you need software to burn the iso i would suggest CD Burner XP
 
I had a very similar problem with a PC which froze dead tight. It turned out, that the kondensators(?or what they're called in English?) were bubbled up and some kind of fluid was seeming to escape, so the mobo was dead. but other parts might cause such a thing as well (like Impotence said - the RAM).

kondensators = Capacitors [I used google images to work it out :)]

The fluid that was leaking is bromine, DON'T TOUCH IT OR INHALE ANY SMOKE, bromine is nasty stuff [from what i remember from high school chemistry its quite good at making you infertile].


Capacitors will blow themselves apart if there wired up back to front, and i have one thats bigger than a can of coke! :P [it has a plug on it thats meant to pop if something is wrong, to stop it from exploding!]

Wow I think we are all getting a bit ahead of ourselves here! Euro98ITR can you still boot into Windows or have you wiped it already? I was going to suggest you look in the Windows Event Viewer. There may be some hardware related clues in there
 
It was the CPU fan which stopped that was causing the problem. Bought and new heatsink and fan and its working fine now !
