Need some help..

Hello guys, I am new to the forums.

I have the following Specs:
AMD 4200+ X2 2,2Ghz standard Cooler
Asus Geforce 7950 GX2
Asus A8N32-Sli Deluxe
2G Kingston HyperX PC 3200
Western Digital 320G Sata2 7200RPM
Enermax Liberty Sli 620Watt
Coolermaster Stacker installed Crossflow Fan..

I have been reading some overlock guides for a while now, but not in any of them I can find answers for my questions. I hope u guys can help me out.

Here are the questions: I want to overclock my cpu from 2,2 to 2,4 if I do this do I HAVE to overclock my RAM aswel?

At the moment I have the following RAM: Kingston HyperX 2048 PC3200. Can I run this memory at the following speed: 1T instead of 2T? Even if I overclocked my CPU?

The reason for overclocking my CPU is because of my GPU, the CPU is still to slow to keep up with my Graphic Card.. Already thanks in advance for helping.
 
Hey and Welcome to HWF.. Im sure Addis is gonna beat me here but here goes... :P

The way I overclocked my CPU from 2.2GHz to 2.62GHz was slowly bumping up the FSB. I lowered the HT Frequency to 2x and then kept doing small increments with my CPU voltage. It is important not to go too far with your CPU Voltage because you risk shortening the life of your processor, or even frying it.

Keep playing around with your CPU & RAM configurations (but do not go too far..) this is the way I got a successful overclock and a stable system. If you manage to get to 2.4 (which Im sure with that system you will) do lots of benchmarking and hit your CPU up to 100% and see how your PC holds out.

Thanks for your quick answer man. But about the HTT how does that exactly work? Because mine is 5X atm and I did noticed that some guides tell that you can't risk getting above 1000Mhz, do they mean the FSB? Mine is 200x11 that is 2200Mhz so 5x200 is 1000. So if I overlock my CPU to 220 it will be 1100Mhz, so I have to put the HTT to 4x? I hope I get this correct lol..

And one more thing, about the voltages if I put my voltages to AUTO in the bios will this work? Will they automatically adjust it?

HTT Frequency
A64s don’t use a traditional Front system Bus. Instead they use a HyperTransport. I can only assume its abbreviated "HTT" to differentiate between Intel’s "HT" and Hyper-Threading Technology. They are VERY different.

The HyperTransport is what controls the base frequency for communications and CPU speed in our A64 System.
The CPU Speed is controlled by the HTT Multiplied by the CPU Multiplier, The HyperTransport or Memory controller is controlled by the HTT Multiplied by the HTT Multiplier, and Memory speed is controlled by the HTT Frequency, Multiplied by the CPU Multiplier and then DIVIDED by the Memory Divider. That’s a bit confusing for most folks. And it took me a while to grasp the concept as well.

HTT Multiplier
Most AMD Motherboards are designed to handle an 800-1000 MHz Hyper Transport bus. Factory Default on 754 CPUs is 800 MHz (A 4X Multiplier) and 1Ghz (5x) on 939 CPU's this is a Critical part of Overclocking an A64 to the Max. Pushing the HyperTransport past 1Ghz can cause all kinds of system instability that is commonly misconceived as "I maxed out my CPU" or "My Ram is holding me back"

Keep it at AUTO for the moment, then Download & Run CPU-Z.

On the first tab this shows you information about your processor. Where it says "Voltage", make a note of it.

Then go back into your BIOS (Always overclock in BIOS, it's more reliable) and increase your CPU FSB. And loosen up your RAM settings, this will give more "space" for your CPU to overclock, if this fails.. now you can MANUALLY change your RAM config.

That helped me a lot man, thanks. I now understand the rules u have to know when overclocking an AMD. I hope more replies will come up for some tips but for the meantime thanks a lot Chris. I am off to bed now lol, got to work tomorrow. Gnight man..
 
as far as i know, every component wen overclocking, is independent now. meaning, you don't have to overclock the ram if you want to overclock the cpu. although this was the case years ago when you had to oclock your vga along with your cpu. i would suggest bumping up the FSB in small increments, and then check for stability and heat. also, remember that if you overclock, it will heat up faster, so make sure you have plenty of ventilation and clean out the fans regularly. I would also recommend you get a liquid cooling system with that rig of yours. don't get a yum-cha, cheapo liquid cooling systems. i'm talking about $500 kits. these kits can even put your cpu below 0 degrees. this is obviously for extreme overclockers who want to squeeze out every ounce of juice from their CPU. (SWIFTECH liquid cooling kits)

by the way, i love your system specs. ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!!
 
to get to 2.4ghz or even 2.6ghz i doubt a liquid cooling system will be needed, my cpu is a 2.2ghz 3700+, i use the stock cooler, i am now running at 2.8ghz and getting the same amount of performance as an AMD 64 FX57, idle temperatures only increased about 2 degrees, idle now is about 30-32 degrees, and load is about 42 degrees. I cant keep stable overclock at 1.45v, stock voltage is 1.40v, but am i correct in thinking the X2's aint very good overclockers?


Also, to give your cpu a stress test and see if its 100% stable, run prime 95 for about 12-24 hours solid, usually when the compuer is left alone, if you get an error, this usually means your cpu is not quite 100% stable, so either bump up the voltage a little, or lower your clocks.

You've got a preety KickAss system there :good:, i bet your memory could overclock pretty well too, or maybe its allready overclocked becouse its not cheap generic crap.
 
loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool. just take it, if you want a bigger overclock, NOT 2.4 to 2.6 ghz, you would need more than just a stock cooler. one more thing, why don't you get an athlon 64 FX 60?
 
Hi guys, sorry that I haven´t reacted a couple of days had it a little bit to busy. But I wanted to say that the overclock went great, atm it´s running on 2,4Ghz with stabile temps.

Thanks for the replies and yes I was thinking of getting a WaterCooling system. But for now this works for me, I am not a extreme overclocker I just want to get a little 10% more out of my specs.:x:

And at Roy92, hehe yeah a FX 60.. nah man, it´s like 800 Euro´s here, I ain´t rich lol.

BTW: little Offtopic but I am really interested, you guys already know a date for the new DX10 GPU's?
