no IP addresses being released

Hi

Have recently restored my sons pc back to factory settings as i couldn't get the USB ports working, after coming on here and being told how to reset the BIOS they are now working fine, the problem i now have is the pc is not releasing an ip address so i cannot set up his pc for wireless internet.....

I have tried Start/Run/CMD/IPconfig /release, and, ipconfig /renew but all i get is No operation can be perfomed on local area connection while it has it's media disconnected..... and no operation can be performed while it has wireless connection disconnected........i have tried going into the lan settings but cannot manually enter an ip address as it's greyed out

Anyone got any ideas?
 
If The Network cable is plugged in, and windows belives that it is not connected to the network then check the device manager, if the network card is NOT listed ensure that it is enabled in the BIOS, i have seen some weird defualt settings! (i am assuming this is on-board lan!).

If the device is showing in device manager, try re-installing the network drivers! (if it is on-board ethernet, the drivers will be on the motherboard cd).

Was that working before? If yes then I think while doing;

Some settings have been changed.....I would say uninstall and reinstall the drivers. Then do all the settings which you would have done before.
 
If you have any kind of encryption or key challenge in effect for your wireless network (you should, I really hope you do), you will have to configure that in the wireless settings before you can connect to your wireless network. If you are running DHCP on the wireless subnet (you probably are), it should get a new IP automatically.

I have been unable to get my sons pc with the wireless adapter to connect to the router since restoring it to factory settings...the original reason for resetting his pc was his USB ports stopped working, after the restore the USB ports were still not working, i was then advised to remove the battery for the BIOS, that did the trick, but since then i've been unable to get his pc to release an IP address, i've spent a fair period of time with the technical department at aol, as it is they who provided the router, they said if after what they had said to try didn't work then i should take the pc to a computer shop as they said there must be a problem.....originally the wireless adapter was working fine until the USB ports stopped working all of a sudden, as i've said, the USB ports are now working.
 
Like I said, you don't need to 'release' his IP address to get his system working. You need to setup his adapter to connect to your wireless router. If you have any authentication steps involved in connecting to the router, you need to get those taken care of first before he will be able to get a new IP address. At that point, you will get a new IP automatically.

Can you at least see the wireless network in your network settings, or is the wireless adapter functioning at all?
 
u probably need to intall the driver for ur sons network adapter. after u install a driver u should be able to connect to a wireless network more better
