norton antivirus v avg antivirus

never used AVG so i cant say, although i have used norton and i found it useless, it never updated properly, could never rid me of viruses so i switched to mcafee and with the 2 firewalls i have on this computer and the 2 on the one downstairs before this one, i havent been infected since i got it, GO MCAFEE!
EDIT: i had the firewalls whilst using norton but norton didnt work with them and i dont know why, mcafee does.
 
Both Norton and Mcafee are HUGE resource hogs, almost as much as windows itself. Norton's LiveUpdate is a P.O.S. and should be replaced with a better uninstallation tool. Mcafee comes with a nice pretty map that shows where viruses have been rampant recently. Pretty but worthless. Maybe it should be replaced with a virus scanner that completes before I get grey hair. AVG wins this battle hands down, but Avast! is better.
 
that AntiVir is pretty good for a free program but it scans a little too slow for my liking.

The Fetus is right, NAV has a nasty habit of detecting but not removing virii. Norton usually suppliments their antivirus with virus removal tools to remove specific types of virii which Norton can't touch. I prefer PC-cillin or Sophos for a commercial AV, and AVG or Clamwin for a free solution.
 
do you think avg or another small antivirus company will ever be as popular as norton?
 
Yea and the virii that Norton can "remove" are usually removed very nastily. Meaning that there are still all kinds of remnants left behind. There is an article about this in a magazine somewhere. *goes and finds it* Ah yes, here it is. The August '05 issue of Maximum PC. The "Heal Your PC" Article. You can more than likely get the just of them at the Maximum PC website. But NAV got a 7 of 10 and McAfee AV got a 5 of 10. A quote from the bit about each. About NAV, "Like Christina Aguilera, Norton Antivirus gets a minor modification every 12 months in order to keep from passing into irrelevance." It goes on to say it was unable to clean a pair of virii that it found. As for McAfee it says, "Oooh, a pretty map that shows the location of recent virus outbreaks! And this helps us how?" It also says, "It's intrusiveness, pokey slowness, and overall ineptitude made us feel like we needed an application to protect us form VirusScan, not viruses." I think that about sums up both of them. Why don't we all get Linux and say "SCREW YOU!!!" to viruses, spyware, and 90% of hackers (script kiddies that have l33t progz that only work on Windows).
 
I've used McAfee before, i actually bought it! Anyway i thought it was ok until the next year when it asked me to pay for updates. I've never used it since, AVG is ok, if there's something that it cant remove then I'll find a remove tool or do it manually. I dont really get infections since i use Zonealarm and no longer d/l cracks or serials which was my biggest source of infections.
 
I just use Bitdefender, if a file is infected it doesn't even let me open it, plus it acts as a spam filter and firewall all in one bundle.
 
oh too right norton sucks big time have never had as much **** bother and hassle when usimg it , now run avg (free i'm a cheapskate lol ) and have not had any problems that iknow of rafl
