NTL broadband replacing usb with ethernet card (connection)

Hi, I am on NTL broadband with desktop PC currently connected via USB to the DSL modem. I bought the D-link (dfe-530tx) ethernet adapter card and installed it in a free slot on the PC to create an ethernet connection.

I unplugged the USB connection and using a straight ethernet cable connected the DSL modem to the 'new' ethernet port on the PC.

The card is recognised by the PC however I cannot make the connection to the internet via the ethernet port.

The Network connections window (i am using XP) says that the 'network cable is unplugged'. (which it is not).

Additionally the green LEDs on the D-link ethernet card do not light up which may indicate.....?

I have completed all the usual checks, rebooted, switched off / on modem etc.

PS my aim is to install the Linksys wireless (wrt54gs) modem once I can establish a straight connection via ethernet between the DSL and PC.
 
Is your NIC connected any installed properly? Right click My computer > Hardware tab > Device Manager > Network Adaptors. Make sure your NIC is present and working properly.

Hi there, yes device manager checks out ok. However under network connections (control panel) it is NOT enabled....any more thoughts, Mark
 
You may have to configure the modem to use the ethernet port, it may not be set up to do so. Check any manuals/documentation that you got with the modem.

This is what you need to do:

My Computer > Control Panel > Network Connections > Right click 'Local Area Network' and select 'enable'. And fingers crossed, your in business :)

Let me just clarify your connections:

You should have a coaxial cable coming out of the wall, which connects to your NTL cable modem. Then an ethernet patch cable (not crossover) which goes from your NTL modem to the ethernet port on your computer's network card, correct?

Hi yes, NTL connection is as you say - all standard. I have experimented by putting my Linksys router into the system and low and behold the nic card comes to life with its LEDs lit up. However I cannot connect to the internet.

I have clicked 'enable' as you suggested but it just comes up with 'cable disconected' which it is not. This leads me to think that I need to configure the NTL modem to utilise the ethernet port?????
