nv40 performance is amazing!

The Radeon 9800XT isn't goint to be the competition to the GeForce 6 line, so I'd sincerely hope that it's beating the Radeon 9800XT or there's gonna be trouble. Don't think ATi doesn't have anything up it's sleeve, which I believe we'll see at the end of the month.
 
On the subject of the NV40 series....the 6800 is gonna be fecking expensive, no doubt. From what I gather it'll mop the floor with all other cards (which is understandable since it isn't even out yet) but I have a query. As I already posted, I'm getting a new PC, and from what I've been told, Radeon is the way to go for DX9 gaming. So, if I were to, say, buy a Radeon card with my new PC, which will easily provide the power needed for the next few monster games, Doom 3, and Half Life 2, and then were to purchase the 6800 next year, would this be a good plan? (Or Radeon, if Ati's next-gen card slaughters the 6800)

So if this sounds like a good idea - it does to me, as by the time I have got my new PC, and then started saving for the 6800, the Radeon that I buy with my PC will be obsolete in comparison, I should have a mean ass PC?

What Radeon would you recommend then? So long as it can handle Doom 3, I'll be happy as by then I can get the 6800, if not sooner.

Of course it's gonna be expensive, but no more so than in the past when the GeForce FX 5800 first came out. Hell, I remember when the GeForce 2 Ultra was like $400-500. The Radeon 9800XT is the the best card you can actually buy right now, unless you've got a crappy system in need of an overhaul. Personally, with the major technology changes coming around the bend, I'd hold off on upgrades for awhile. We don't have a confirmed release date for Doom 3 or Half-Life 2. Doom 3 could very well eat the GF 6800 Ultra for lunch too, but you won't know until it hits.

Get the best Radeon possible: the 9800XT. Until you can actually buy the GF 6800 Ultra, it is king of the hill. Again, keep in mind that we have yet to see what ATi has in store, and I believe we'll find out toward the end of this month.

I've been with nVidia since I got my first decent PC, which was like 4 years ago, which is why I'm upgrading soon. GeForce MX440 64Mb.The best game I own graphically that it can run superbly is UT2003, and the Painkiller Demo.

The Radeon 9800XT runs HL2, I'm guessing, namely as the card comes with a voucher.......... :p, so thats good enough for me in the mean time. Plus it comes out on top with Far Cry, and UT2004. Which manufacturer would you get the card from?

If I was you, I wouldn't even get the 9800XT unless you've got cash to spare. Since the next line of cards from both ATI and Nvidia are both just around the bend, you're about to see prices drop on the current flagship models of both Nvidia and ATI cards. Right now the best bang-for-buck you can get on a good DX9 video card is either a 9800np or a 9800Pro (for a little more). Either card will perform very closely to the 9800XT, and both are significantly less expensive.
 
How soon will they drop, and by how much will they drop? Are you talking a hundred or so $/£'s? In which case, as I'm not getting my PC til about June this year, I would go for 9800XT. The next-gen cards will be phenomenal, but for 500$/£, I'm not prepared to pay that much yet, when I can get a decent enough card, that will last a while, long enough for the 6800 and Ati's new cards to drop in price sufficiently. That's what I'm hoping for, anyway.

from my past gaming experience with the top games, ive had nothing but the best with radeon, sure its beat by the new g400 but the radeon out now isnt the same age as it , i think when radeon does come out, itll be craploads better than the 6800, cause if not then it wont run the new genre of games cleanly, thats my opinion, an opinion from a hardcore gamer :)

I never buy flagship model video cards, unless they're on some kind of uber-sale or something. Unless you're made of cash, just look out for the cards that are the most for your money. As for your question, when a new line of video cards are released, the next model down goes down an average of about 25% a month. :)
