Pentium D Vs. Core 2 Duo

I have the PD 915 @ 4GHZ (look at pc specs). If I get, lets say the E6600 will i really see that much of a diff. The most intense task my pc really does is loading all the startup programs (theirs alot), and the occasional video editing but thats it. Please dont give me links just an answer. Is it worth the money? I can get it in Dec. By that time should i plan on getting something else like quad?
 
Probably not. The E6300 is roughy equivalent to the Extreme Edition 935, for a comparison to the Pentium D. If you don't do a lot of video editing, the upgrade may not be worth it. However, if you intend to do more, it could be a worthwhile investment.
For gaming, you wouldn't see a jump as you'll be capped by the video card first, rather than the CPU in most cases.
 
would i get a jump in game preformance with my pentium D 945 3.4ghz
1 if i changed to e6600 - e6700
or 2 would it be much better if i upgraded to Q6600

and my graphics card is a ati saphire x1950 pro 512mb pci-e
 
@ cloud: Yes, it'd be an improvement. Weather you'd notice it would be a different story.

@thomas: If gaming is your focus, a video card would be a much better investment than a CPU. The X1600/X1650 (save X1650XT) are mediocre performers. I'd bet my stock Pentium D 920/X1650 would be about the same in graphic scoring as your box. I did get a boost by overclocking the card, but it's still not as good as my X2 3800+/7900GS combo.
 
What games do you play now and what games are you looking forward to down the road? What kind of price are you looking at?
 
the only game ive ever played is Rome Total War (i know, its sad) and i dont have future hopes of any other games except maybbeeeeeee halo. Price range. well probaly no more than 150 seeing as my x-mas budget is 400.
 
The card you have now doesn't seem like much of a slouch for what you play. However, if you want something relatively cheap, a GeForce 7900GS or Radeon X1950Pro can be had for about the same price. Midrange DX10 cards just don't seem to be that impressive right now, so unless you can't stand it, you're better off avoiding the 8600 and Radeon HD 2600 series.
 
sure, ill probably go for the Radeon X1950Pro. Im still a little weary about it since i just bought it and it would mean ive only had the x1600 for 7 months. I guess in todays technology thats good, though. What water block would u recommend for the VGA. The one i have now is ok but its not the best, its the thermaltake tide one or something, its small.
 
From what people tell me, Danger Den is about the best you can get, but the likes of Swiftech and PolarFLO are reputable as well.
 
Off-hand, I wouldn't know, as that's out of my knowledge. You might check Overclockers.com or [H]ard|Forums cooling sections for more info. Newegg reviews tend to have a lot of idiots. One guy complained that waterblock didn't cool his video card's RAM.
I mean, duh, that's a limitation of pretty much every VGA waterblock. :rolleyes:
