Problems after hardware upgrade

Hey all,

I recently upgraded the PSU and memory on my rig, and ever since I upgraded, my GPU (7900GTX) fan has been going mental even in 2D mode and is running at 57 celcius when idle.

Once I left my PC on overnight And when I came back to it I moved the mouse to activate the display but nothing responded, I had to turn it off at the mains at the power button had no effect.

Now earlier today whilst installing Rainbow Six Vegas my mouse cursor disappeared then everything crashed and my mobo made a beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep, like just one long beep that didn't stop so I had to turn it off at the power button. This just shouldn't happen.

Anyone got any ideas? I've made the memory timings more lax than it's meant to be (meant to be 2-3-3-6 but I've changed it to 3-6-6-8 to see if it helps and it's all good so far but this problem takes a loooong time to happen and I'm not even sure if it'll happen again. I shouldn't have to do it anyway since the memory should run fine at low latency being Corsair TWINX with silver heatspreader).

It's mainly the GPU fan I need to sort out because it's really loud and annoying.

The above link is beep codes, is the bios type on your motherboard Award? if so, it says any other beeps, Ram problem, so you have a long beep, and you had to raise the timing on your ram, and the beep indicated ram problem from what i have seen, i would suggest trying another stick of ram for that, see if the same problem still persists.

About your GPU Fan though, its really confusing :p, what are the temperatures of the GPU?

Maybe its a bug with the graphics drivers too, unless it does it out of windows, try some other graphics drivers like the Omega Nvidia Drivers.

Check power connectors too.

Is gaming ok appart from this fan issue?
 
RAM timings at the advertised rate were causing my system to become unstable it seems... Disappointed with it because this RAM isn't cheap and is meant to run well. It's not like my mobo is incapable of handling it either.

I might as well have just gone and bought some value RAM.

Goodday Mike,

After changing your psu have you left your case cluttered, i sometimes find that psu cables can get absolutely everywhere and take up much space... now about your fan spinning like crazy, perhaps it's hitting a cable that makes it seem like its running crazy. 57 degrees isnt that much to be worried about.
If i were you id download motherboard monitor 5 and monitor the ambient temperatures within your case, cpu and gfx card just to see if it is the gfx card alone. If they all appear to be a tad too high id suggest getting something to tie the cables together and clear a bit of air.

How would a cable make it seem like its spinning like crazy?

I am guessing this wierd fan speed were its speeding up, slowing down all the time could be to do with maybe firmware, bios or something in the card, faulty fan speed sensorr etc.., i would download and install the Omega drivers, i think with those you can manually alter the fan speed, so when in 2d just change the fan speed to say 25%.
 
Well Willz if it was hitting a cable it would make it louder...
I also recommend Z-Tweaked drivers as opposed to normal Nvidia ones

Edit. About the ram... Corsair ram can be very tempermental (the amount of time it took me to get optimum ram timings was terrible), you want to look for a guide that gives you timings with your make of motherboard as mobo make depends heavily on this. GL

Actually, Corsair, amongst others like G.Skill, PQI, Patriot and OCZ, has the best motherboard compatibility out there. It's just the DFI boards that are fussy about Corsair memory and not the memory itself. IMHO, short of TCCD based modules like the Patriot XBL+ and OCZ EL Platinum, Corsair makes the best memory. In addition, most DFI NF4 boards default the Vdimm to 2.5v which is too low for such tight timings. Try running with the default module's timings and up the Vdimm a little.

Oh yes thats right... its DFI that its tempermental with lol... you see my brain failed to remember that bit of the information. Yer i doubt mike has DFI

I do have a DFI board actually :P Easy to miss though.

Well all I had to do was raise the RAM voltage and it became stable. Reccommended is 1.75 and I had it at 1.60 so it's just something I missed.

As for the GPU fan, well I had my radiators on full blast and the room was pretty hot... Not the room is cool with no heating it runs at normal speeds and temps so that was my own fault too.

Lol good stuff... even the hiper type R cables get messy within the case, the outter wrapping is WAY to thick.
 
Lol, the Type-R is the first PSU i have had that made my case tidy :p, for my next PSU upgrade i proberbly will get the Hiper Typer-R 730W, allthought the connectors are at the bottom of the PSU now, which proberbly will make it really awkward and not fit into most cases. I think i will stay with Hiper :p, its a really good brand, never had a problem with it, i think its an english company too :p

I am surprised that the amount of people that have type-R's actually have them, i thought they were preety unknown, i have had mine since summer 2005.
 
Go to BIOS and set your settings to "Fail Safe Defaults" coz i had the same thing happened when I was fiddling around with the BIOS Setting some time ago...
 
Thanks Karinislove, but failsafe defaults on my board starve my RAM of voltage. That's what I had to adjust to make my system stable again.

I have a question though - My broat doesn't increase voltage by increments of 0.05v, it increases by 0.10v. If my RAM requires 1.75v would 1.8v slowly start to cook my RAM? Cause I'm a fussy eater...

That small amount of voltage would not really make a difference in the long run.
Consider it an overclock :cool:
 
Most DDR is good up to 2.8V...and that's just the value segment stuff. DDR2 seems to run in the range of 1.8-2.1V.
