Quick Question

The XT has the faster clock speeds, but that's the only thing that differs it from the Pro or regular 9600.

If you can swing it, Newegg has Radeon 9800's for around $160, and Radeon 9800 Pro's for around $200. If you can swing some extra cash, those would be the way to go.

But, if that isn't an option, with the 9600XT and 9600Pro being the same price, go for the XT--hands down.
 
the ones on new egg are 9800pro 128mb cards for 230 but will is it better then the 256 9600 xt. wich has double the memory.

so what im asking is the 9800 pro 128mb better then the 256mb 9600XT


sorry for all the questions i just wana make sure i can get the best i can for my money
 
yes... the 9800pro 128mb is faster than 9600xt 256mb. cause the 9600 series has 4 pixel pipelines and 128bit memory interface compare to 9800pro that has 8 pipeline and 256bit mem interface.
 
The more pipelines a card has, the more work it's able to do.

While more memory can help with larger textures, it's only to a certain extent. The 9800 Pro will blow the pants off a 9600XT.
 
so that would be a best buy for me excluding the 6800 and the x800
are any of the nVidia cards that would match the 9800pro 256
 
The GeForce 5900 Ultra, but the 9800 has better DX9 implementation and image quality.
 
im on my way to buy the radeon 9800 pro but a question came up. on the installation process im going to install it myself. so the question when i install it i have to remove my old card from there and put the new one in its place. if so my old card is an nVidia will that be a conflict on my comp if my new card is radeon.
 
You will want to uninstall the nVidia drivers first before shutting down and swapping cards---at the very least. It would be a good idea to clean out the nVidia drivers as well, for best results. Off hand, I don't have a link on how to properly do this, but there is a tool called Detonator Destroyer that can do it for you. I think you can find that over @ Guru of 3D.

Of course, you can do it like me and have a higher risk of problems if you just pull the nVidia card and drop in the 9800 Pro. But, if you at least uninstall the nVidia drivers, that will help. If worst comes to worst, you'd go and reinstall Windows, but that shouldn't be necessary.

I would make sure to have the latest drivers tho. The Catalyst 4.8 are the latest official drivers. The 4.9 beta's are available to improve performance in D00M 3, but I've heard a lot of people are having major problems with them, so I'd shy away from them right now.
 
As for the X800 series, the X800 Pro is just overpriced right now, so not a good buy. The other ones are very hard to find.

As for the 6800 series, the GT seems to be the perfect card for price/performance ratio, but it's still very expensive.

I had to buy a card a month ago and decided to go with the 9800 Pro 128mb/256 bit as well
