Router dropping connection?

Hi there!

Ive got a problem with my router and its connection to the internet.

I'm running a self built PC :-

AMD Athlon 64 3200+
CRUCIAL 1GB DDR PC3200
PNY Verto GeForce 6 6600GT
ASRock (939DUAL-SATA2) mobo
Seagate ST3160812AS 160GB 7200.9 SATA II 7200rpm Drive
Windows XP Pro SP2

D-Link DSL-GS604T Wireless Router.


The problem is this - Most of the time I switch the PC on and can connect to the internet, MSN, All seeing eye etc no problems. Sometimes though I can't connect to the internet (this page cannot be displayed) and MSN will not connect. To resolve this I have to reset the router and re-enter the username and password from my ISP (pipex). This works about 50% of the time but I have to do this 2 or 3 times on most occasions. The PC is wired to the router and there is nothing connected wirelessly at the moment.

I have absolutely no idea about networking and cant even begin to understand what might be causing this. Any ideas?

It's hard to tell from the information you've provided whether the problem is your ISP, glitchy firmware on your router, or a problem with Windows.

Next time this problem happens, try pinging the router by IP. Next, try pinging 4.2.2.2 and see if you get a reply back. Then try pinging Google and see if you get a reply back. Let me know these results.

If you're talking about DSL line filters, you should have one on every line except the one your ATU (aka "DSL Modem") is located on. There should never be a filter on the line your ATU is on.

well my DSL doesn't work if i remove ANY filters, i was told this by my ISP (virgin.net)
 
If you put a filter on the line you're running your ATU on, it will effectively filter the ADSL fequency range right out of your DSL line, which makes no sense. Every phone drop except the one your ATU is connected to should have a filter, or else you should have a DSL-splitter isolating the line at the demarkation spot. See here if you don't understand what I mean.
 
not only did i not understand, but you deserve a blue peter badge for knowing so much about DSL, i'm officially bowing out gracefully while i still can, bye AT
 
call up help desk and they'll give you an ip address where you can disable and enable your modem online. first, plug your modem direct to your computer before doing whatever they tell you to do. hope this helps...

I pinged 4.2.2.2 after the connection dropped again and that failed. I downloaded network magic and that was able to reconnect but only after I re entered the username/password again. This leads me to believe the problem is with the router rather than Windows or Pipex???

The router has a modem built in, and as I said above the connection was immediately repaired with Network Magic after the Username/passord was re entered.

I've used Pipex for eons and never had a problem with them.

One thing I noticed was Network Magic detected an Intruder called D6GMM72J, which I'm guessing is a neighbour using the wireless router. I've enabled WEP (which I dont understand fully) but I dont see how this would disconnect me at all?

I dont have a new micro filter to try but i'll find one at some point and give it a whirl. There is one line in my flat with a phone and router connected to the filter.
 
Not to be rude, I want to help you out but I really can't help you effectively if you don't do the things I've asked. Next time this happens, please try pinging your router by IP address. If you don't know your router's IP, run the command

and look at the gateway IP. Next, try pinging Google and 4.2.2.2 just for a litmus. That will give us a better idea of what's going on here.

Sorry but networking lingo is a little lost on me. I pinged the router and google with the connection running with obvious results - no problems. I'll do the same when the connection drops again and let you know what happens.

No problem, it's just that we need to discover whether the connection is going down between your PC and your router or between the router and the internet. I had you ping both google.com and 4.2.2.2 to see if there was a DNS problem.

Makes sense! :O

Even with the connection down I can access the routers control panel via its IP address so I guess that means the problem is the internet connection in one way or another. Like I said I'll ping both again when the connection drops.
 
Interesting point, since I installed Network Magic and used the repair connection function there have been no problems. Could this have solved the issure as I have no idea what this function has done?
 
maybe it has refreshed your DNS, or cleared any conflicts. so it may stay clear for a while. correct me plz.
 
Seems all OK now, I cant remember who had a link to Network magic in their sig but thanks. Its done the trick :) Marked as resolved.
