Safely remove hardware

Is it necessary to go through that "Safely Remove Hardware" wizard everytime i remove my flash memory stick. I know the instructions say so but it really is a pain.

well i never do, i just pull it out, then when win complains, i just tell it to ignore it, but don't disconnect while your transfering data to or from it

Honestly, i'd say it's safe to just pull it out. USB was designed for that purpose.
As mentioned, don't remove the drive when data is transferring.

'Safely Remove Hardware' is just a way of making sure that all disk activity has finished before you pull it out.

I tend not to with less important stuff but anything with important work on I always do. I know a couple of friends who have lost the content of their pen drive / ipod as a result.

I dont either but if I simply pull out my usb irda adapter my computer crashes so have to use the "safely remove hardware" thing. Its the only usb device ive got which causes problems.

you should use the safly remove hardware option (on linux use sync), it doesnt take much longer and it ensures that the files have been transferd (otherwise you could end up with bits of files, instead of the files you wanted on it!)

True Impotence! But I was just wondering, will it give threat to the data which is already on the Stick/HDD?

I cant think of any reason whey it would (unless its re-writing the file tables?)

its best just not to risk it tho!

select the USB flash drive option, optimize for quick removal, in it's properties.
