To me the 42 thing came from the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy and i think thats how it was popularized.

i was too to begin with, but after a while i figured the conclusions must have being engineered to equal 42

actually, as it turns out a lot of things about the universe do equal 42, so i'm sure thats where they got the number from for the movie.
