recently, i have made no hardware or software changes. but, all of a sudden, i cant log in to windows because of the blue screen of death! i can get into my BIOS and motherboard settings just fine, but when it starts to boot up, it gives me a choice of safe mode, safe mode with networking, log in to windows with safest settings, and normal. i have tried them all, but none get me into windows. i reset my motherboard alreay, and i really do not want to format my hard drive AGAIN. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!

specs:
mobo: ASUS AV7600-X
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2700+ at 2176MHz
graphics: nvidia geforce 4 ti 4200 64MB
RAM:384 MB
60 GB western digital hard drive
300 watt power supply (if that helps)

Hmm, I'm not sure about that. Could be a virus or corrupted drivers or any number of things. Are Automatic Updates on?

a hardware virus? is there a such thing? and are you referring to auto updates that would be located in my BIOS?

1. No, not a hardware virus, a computer virus, they can easily cause your computer to BSOD by messing with system files, i.e. drivers.
2. Windows Automatic Updates. They can be bad. If they Update you to an incompatable driver it can cause you BSOD.
This is obviously a software problem, but the BSOD means it realates to hardware. This leaves drivers, at least I would think, as the culprit.

well, I'm not really sure what to do, let me get Exfoliate here to help, he's smarter.
ok, thanks. is there a way i can access system restore from the command prompt? haha im not even sure how to get to the command prompt with windows XP :-( , and thats what i have.

Okay, sorry about the wait. Okay, I'll just make sure I know what you've done, so in the BIOS I take it you already set it back to optimized defaults, that's worked for me on several occasions. Assuming that didn't work you flashed it right? That should have taken care of your probs. But as an alternative to reformating, you can reset your CMOS. To do this take the little CMOS battery out for between 30 seconds to a minute and then reinsert it carefully, you can also reset the jumper too for good measure:good:

Sort of but what choice does he have? But never mind becuase apparently the comand prompt worked, now I do feel smart, thanks Max:)
