Virus software problem - 2 types on laptop

Hello, I already had an old version of Norton (2002) on my laptop. When I connected it for the first time to the internet using mozilla, I also downloaded antivir software. I used the internet for about an hour with no problems, however the second time I used it, i was offered the chance to update to antivir pe classic. I restarted the laptop and since then it is incredibly slow when I try to use any software at all. I uninstalled Norton and tried to access the internet again, but all programs stop responding after a few minutes. Any help or advice? many thanks nicola

Step 1) Completely uninstall Norton Antivirus and AntiVir from the 'add/remove programs' applet in the control panel. Both of these Antivirus products are bloated and steal system resources. Neither program can catch many virus, especially in the case of AntiVir.

Step 2) Run CCleaner

Step 3) Install decent antivirus software. Did I mention it's free? :)

Step 4) Defragment your hard disks.

Step 5) Please read this

Step 6) Sit back with your favourite brand of coffee, and browse the internet with an overall sense of security.

Hey megamaced!, I m using McAfee from long time as it provides free security (it doesnt provide the adware, firewall for free but other than that, I m using windows firewall so I dont care about McAfee firewall).

My question is do you recommend me to replace my current McAfee with avast?

I've never used McAfee so I'm not in a position to say whether it's any good or not.

Avast provides excellent protection against viruses and other threats. It includes real time scanning of P2P, Instant Messaging, Email, Internet and Network. It certainly wouldn't hurt to give it a go. Its completely free, although you have to register with them.

PS. I wouldn't rely on the inbuilt Windows Firewall to protect you! It's very weak and only protects against incoming traffic. Therefore any spyware that may be installed on your system can still transmit data. I suggest you have a look at ZoneAlarm Personal Firewall which is free. It provides much better protection, but can be a resource hog.
