Vista and XP sharing docs

Hi, just wiped my 320GB Hard Drive (After backing up all my stuff from XP) and then created a 100GB Partition because I have just upgraded to Windows Vista Ultimate Edition 64 bit. Anyway I intend to dual boot XP in the next couple of weeks when I can be arsed installing XP again.

Only 100GB of my 320GB is partitioned at the moment, and I intend to make 2 more 100GB+ Partitions, one for XP and one for all my Documents.

My question is, will I be able to access my (backed up from XP So all my music and pics and vids folder is in my docs) documents from both OS's, if I put all my stuff on this seperate partition, and will I have to do anything to make vista read all my pics vids and music (e.g. take the music vids and pics folders out of my documents) ??
 
Hello! mr rimmer! ..MMMmm ... make sure I have this right !ok you want to 'dual' boot! ..if you install the whole xp operating system on one partition & then create another partition for the vista you mentioned 100gb or whatever size..e.t.c. & once done add your doc's accordinley as you will no doubt know you can then access them from 'my computer' (desktop)..I know what you mean in respect to having a completely seperate 'partition' just for your doc's & piccys...but it's the good ole' vista thing I tell you what this is what I would do!.....(sorry I am loooong winded )..make sure first that you have all your doccy's e.t.c.safely copied first..if you know what I mean!..

Then do a complete fresh install of your XP opreating system...if you CAN be arsed!........once done I then sugest that you find a FULL copy of 'partiion majic' pro..install to xp (obviousley) once you have familarised yourself with the programe..(important me thinks!)....you can then proceed to create extra 'partitions' from your desktop!...bla bla bla .....if your happy with the 'three' patitions & everything is done! you can then SEND all your doc's e.t.c. to the appropiate partition!...on the last matter I have to be honest & say not sure if 'vista' & vice versa (xp) will both reconize one another?...in respect to your doc's & soforth!.......

(coz I is that type of guy!!).......bye for now!...........Hey I'm back! ..first things first when you do your triple' partitions make sure that you install XP FIRST!.....on the can you 'access' docs e.t.c. you could try this! install microsoft office 2007! if you have an older office i.e. office 2003 then you might need a ms plug in! Hi, thanks for all that, erm... I am already running vista as we speak, and on a sidenote I also got many of my XP games working with no problems despite my Vista copy being 64 bit. The only ones that don't run are generally games that I have already played and completed, or crap ones. So looks like I am going to delay XP longer or do away with it completely, depending.

Oh and before anybody says you get higher framerates in XP compared to Vista, that was only because drivers were in an early stage and weren't fully developped. My framerates on Counter Strike Source and Battlefield 2 are actually a tiny bit better than they were on XP and BF2 believe it or not, is a game which says on the box it only works with XP 32 bit, not only optimised for it.

Oh and I almost forgot, I have Office 2007 and if I can be arsed putting XP on, I will install it to that too.
 
Hello again! well that's that!...ER I notice in your pc specs that your graphics card is only 64mb? or is that a spelling mistake!......if this is the case me thinks a possable upgrade pending??.......Hey! what do I know!..I will have to stay out of the way when it comes to playing pc games as I'm a stickler for games consoles!.......anyway's thanks............
 
It is possible to access your documents from both O/S's, as they both can read NTFS and Fat32 file systems. You shouldn't have to do much to view your files from either OS if you put them in a seperate partition. They will just appear in a different drive in My Computer.

How to Install XP after Vista - Tech Support Guy Forums Here's a guide on how to install XP after Vista. I would recommend that XP is installed first, as it makes things a lot easier. XP and Vista write over the 'bootload' on the MBR (Master boot record, located on the hard drive). The boot loader tells the computer what to do when it switches on and has passed the BIOS. If you install XP then Vista, you end up with the Vista bootloader, which recognises the XP partition (normally!). However, the other way around, you end up with the XP bootloader, which doesn't recognise Vista. The tutorial above tells you how to re-install the Vista bootloader after you have installed XP.

thanks for that Thomas, and as for my PC Specs, that Sig is partly wrong.

My specs are:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Socket 939 Overclocked to 2.51GHz from 2.00GHz
mATX gigabyte board with PCI Express
2Gig of DDR 333 - 4 x 512mb
nVIDIA GeForce 6200 (64MB onboard the card, and up to 768MB can be borrowed from the ram to up the texture memory, if needed which is very unlikely considering the crap clock speeds of the card)
600 Gig total hard drive space in 5 hard drives
600Watt Thermaltake toughpower PSu

anyway the card is crap, yes, and I intend to get an 8600GT for cheap and then never upgrade this box again, but buy a new PC when I decide to game more, I also play more console games now, /Xbox 360

As I say though, sticking to the topic, I may just do away with XP completely. Until something really relevant comes up that requires XP as an absolute necessity.
