WD mybook 3 only works in usb 2 slots

I have a WD mybook 3. Since it is a usb 3 external hard drive, I prefer to plug it into one of my usb 3
ports. However, it is only recognized when I plug it into a usb 2 port. The usb 3 ports are working, as
I can use any of my other external storage devices with the usb 3 ports.
I installed the pcie usb controller card that came with the drive- same story.
Nothing in device manager is complaining about an irq conflict and everything is reported to
be working properly.
This seems very strange and I'm not sure where to start.
I'll get WD diagnostics and maybe that will turn up something.
(Background info)
I built this computer. It has an
Asus m4a88td-m usb 3 mobo with an AMD phenom II x4 955. The computer is running windows 7 ultimate 64 bit.

Update: After a firmware update and a few plug-in-unplug operations, the drive started to be recognized in the
usb 3 ports. I thought it might be the cable (forgot to mention this before) originally, so I tried a different one
with the same result. So, at this point I have no idea what was going on. The important part is of course that it
works, but I sure would like to know WTF

Here's what you can do: download the latest chipset drivers here. Restart and see if the problem persists. I have an ASUS Striker II Extreme and also have a WD PAssport 500GB, with similar issues. I don't know if it's a problem with ASUS's usb ports, or WD's external hard drives!
