What anti-virus?

I am building my first PC and I dont know what kind of anti-virus can I use, I want the PC to me secured well, also the PC is an Price and Performance PC so I dont want to spent a lot of money on the anti-virus.

In addition to antivirus, you should also get a good firewall as well to help protect your computer. Zonealarm Pro has a good free version and another good free one is called Comodo. In addition to Antivirus and firewall, you should also get some sort of malware protection to get the stuff that antivirus have trouble with. Three good free ones you can get are Malwarebytes, Spy bot Search and Destroy, and Adaware by lavasoft.
 
Call me crazy... but do computer whizzes like us even need protection anymore? I've had everything MSE, AVG, Avast... none of which protected me from the annoying trojan that seems to be spreading around the internet (Antivirus 2011). Besides that son of a gun... i haven't had a virus in months or maybe years. Does anyone agree?
 
These days you really need some sort of protection, I use Mainly Avast or NOD32... The Virus you refer too is NOT your normal trojan... It is called a SMART Virus and they made it as a AntiVirus, But It is a Smart Virus.. They made it for each year, starting in 2009... I Had to fix about 10 computers through the years with this Virus..
the Problem with a Smart Virus is the Only way to get rid of it is too WIPE the hard drive and reinstall the OS.. Now days it is a good Idea to Have a good AV, Plus Other trojan cleaning software... I use SuperAntispyware and trojan remover..

Same here. Fixed about 20 this year because of this virus alone. I like to use ComboFix when i can get into safe mode. A lot of the times though the virus messes up the boot files and then a wipe is required.

I'm better off with no antivirus. No need for it's services. Throughout the years i've learned how to identify a download that looks suspicious. I use Peerblock to filter ips. Thats about it.
 
Thought I'd throw my two cents in here for anyone who might be listening. Having gone through various home edition and enterprise edition anti-virus through the years I can tell you that they all have flaws one way or another. Anti-virus alone will not protect you, common sense is the best defence. Having said that, there are certain AV solutions I would always stay away from, those being AVG (bloated, ads), Norton (extremely bloated), Microsoft Security Essentials (gets a very bad score in AV tests these days). If you want free protection you should be looking at Avast or AntiVir. If you don't mind to spend a penny then Kaspersky scores highly.
 
Also in addition, I would challenge whether for a home user, a 3rd party client firewall has been necessary since Vista+ since the Windows Firewall now guards inbound and outbound traffic. Not only that, but almost everyone uses some kind of router supplied by their ISP which will provide some basic firewalling by default, and obviously NAT which in itself provides some protection
 
i would recommend kaspersky cause till now i have only got 2 trojans that have been in my PC for more than 1hr.
 
If you want to have a constant free license, go for ESET. They have FB page where they post username and code. I'm availing them now.
 
Now Days I use an Antivirus called 360 Total Security, I install it on all my costumers computers.. It is One of the best In My Opinion... It uses Bitdefender and Avira engine.. I have been using it now for over 5 years..

Most antiviruses that are widely advertised usually protect really well, you have to be aware of what you are looking for, some anti-virus programs only provide narrow field of protection, some very vast and sometimes too strict, my recommendations would be to do research a little bit a bout the most common ones: Avast/AVG, NOD32, Kaspersky, Norton, Comodo, IObit software, all of them have their advantages and disadvantages. And my personal advice to you, would be to browse safely and don't click any links that you think are suspicious or you don't fully recognize, common sense is the best protection against viruses.
