Which Card?????? Easy Question thanks!

The number of bits is referring to the width of the memory bus. This means that the 6800 has double the number of bits, among other pieces that make it faster than the 6600GT. While, yes, the clock speeds for the GPU and Memory on the 6600GT are higher, don't equate MHz with better performance. IIRC, the 6800 has more pipelines in it than any 6600 GPU. Combine this with the aforementioned 256-bit memory bus, and you don't have to rely on the fastest clock speeds to get the best performance. Additionally, if you're into overclocking, you might be able to get the 6800 up to 6800GT or even 6800Ultra speeds. Gainward does make their cards for overclocking...although it's still not a guarantee you'll OC anything past stock speeds.
 
ok i understand tat, but the reason i dont want the 6800 right now is because the review i found is that the fan is cheap and that the card overheats , i dont need a card tat poverhets. i have heating probs already , and i dont wanna go through getting a new fan forr it, will the geforce 6600GT run hl2 and cs:s, doom3 good? for 225 i hears its best bang for buck but thanks, if u can find mee a better 6800 for 250-275 thattll be fine, even if its buy some1 like XFX , thanks

AND PLUS it has faster speeds PLUS the fact that its ddr3
and doesnt 256-bit only have to do with color and looks- idc about tht if so
and whats a pipeline.. lol
 
Yeah clockspeed is no longer a reliable way to compare performance. Now its mainly how efficient the card is and other things like pipelines etc. I agree i have a Gainward FX 5900 and I've overclocked it to nearly ultra speeds and its been fine. That does however depend on your particular card and wether you get lucky.
 
well I'll lay it down for ya bub. if you have heating issues as it is, any card will overheat. That's just how it is. HL2, CS:S and DOOM3...go with the 6800.

`256-bit has to do with the ram. I don't know exactly what it does but 256-bit is faster, and has a better overclocking ability then 128-bit. Color has nothing to do with it.

`You cant compare video cards by mere mhz these days. Just doesnt work.

`think of a pipeline as a lane in a freeway. The more lanes there are, the faster cars get through. In this case it's how fast pixels get rendered.
 
Swirly, just for your information i know these cards run HL2 / CS:S without any noticeable slow downs or lag:
9600XT
9700 / 9700Pro
9800 / 9800Pro / 9800AIW
anything better than these ATI wise obviously run better.. so ur fine..

So if you are buying a 6600GT or 6800 only because your worried about not running newer games like FarCry, Doom3, HL2 and modifications don't spend that much..

My younger bro has a machine i built for him for general net surfing and work which plays half-life 2 and CS:S (multiplayer) with a stable FPS of around 50-60fps on medium graphics using DX9 and his specs are:
Antec 350W PSU
AMD Duron 1800mhz
512mb Kingston PC3200
PCChips El-Cheapo 848ALU
ATI 9700Pro 128mb (8 pipelines - 4 Vertex Shaders)

and it runs Doom3 nicely as well.. although you should expect better fps if u got the 9700Pro as he is running a duron which has a horrible fsb and is just not good for gaming..

Newegg has a Jaton brand 6800 for $270. I've not seen a whole lot of Jaton products, but they seem to be fine. Want a pretty card, look elsewhere. Same for a fat bundle. You just want a card that works and nothing else, that's probably the best bet.
 
yeah thats all true, but look at the review i poseted before, it OWNS the radeon 9800XT badly by like 50 fps each game, im just not sure, can i buy th 6800 regular from nvidia and not from gainward, like can u find me th link of the card MADE byu nvidia the exact card, prolly on the website?? My friend has a radeon 9800 pro and it runs hl2 and source great and if the 6600 GT beats the 9800 XT then it kill the 9800 pro
 
I've seen about a 12 fps increase across most games from pro to XT. Like from reviews and what not.

it looks nice, its overclocked to the pci speeds, 500/1000
plus, it has a nice ddr3 and 128-bit pipeline but the card i have now is 128 and i dont see a prob, im using the 9700 pro , i just want a decnt card, not top of the line BS

Nope. Can't buy an nVidia card, since they don't make any retail cards.

Depends on what you're playing and at what resolution, not to mention if you're turning on Anistropic Filtering and/or AntiAilasing. The 6600GT falls in between the Radeon 9800 and GeForce 6800 in terms of performance. Sometimes it's right above the 9800, and sometimes it's nipping at the heels of the 6800. It's not cut and dry.

I haven't looked around, but you might find a very limited selection of 6600GT AGP cards out right now. Plus, the price will drop, especially with Christmas coming up. Yeah, you can buy right now, but you might find it advantageous to wait a little longer (2-3 weeks) to snag it. You might have more options of who to buy from, more brands, and lower prices. It's barely been released.
 
ye true, but the thing is im using a radeon 9700 pro aiw, and my friend is taing it back this week, i need a new card to replace it or im screwed.. so if i get the moneyill get this one i guess.. i think the 6600GT is better than the regular 6800 because in ,most tests it beats it, maybe some1 can find me a 6800 card link because i can only buy from gainward and i dont like gianward much, or u can find me a card that beats the 6600GT ( cant find many ) but i want an nVidia.... if u magically can find me a 6800GT for like 299 or 275 id be thrilled lol but otherwise would u think that the 6600GT will run cs:s , hl2 , doom3 really good at 1024 by 768?? thats my basic resolution i play on, plus in all the tests,, the 9800 pro doesnt come close to the 6600GT , the 6600GT even kills the 9800proXT.. its a great card fro what ive been lookin at the past days!! ;)!!!!
 
tests, what kind of tests? like 3dmark? IMHO I would never buy a card because of synthetic tests. Test it on a game engine, like doomIII. The 6800GT will get better scores. Nvidia is better in OpenGL, while ATI is better in Direct3d. Right? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but In the same games the 6800Gt will get higher FPS than the 6800Gt.
 
i didnt say ANYTHJING about a 6800GT i copmpared a 6800 and a 6600GT , the 6600GT beats the 6800 in a lot of tests in games along with the 9800 pro
 
oh, my bad. then a 6600GT would be the best for that price. good luck finding the right one that's AGP, I've only seen two and they've been outta stock
 
its a rather popular card these days its everywhere in forums for ppl that dont rip themselves off by paying 500 bucks nvidia is making moeny with a kickass card midrange in price and it exceeds the 9800 pro and 9800proXT , this is great , and the XFX one if overclocked to the speeds of the faster pci-e version.. HEHE happy.. and yeah i fouhnd one on newegg.. do u think its good, ddr3 , 128mb, the only badf thing is the 128-bit , but if it beats the 9800pro XT im in..
 
From what I can tell, the 6600's are all 128-bit, and no 256-bit's are in sight. The 6600GT differs from the plain 6600 in two things: faster clock speeds and (with the PCIe version only) the ability to do SLI.
 
ye ive been looking and i think its my card.. its basically better than the 6800 besides for the fact thAT in higher res with aa on but i dont use aa and i play in 1024 plus in 1600X1200 in hl2 it gets 50 fps find that great.. seems good?
