So this is kind of embarrassing, but I just remembered that I upgraded the processor in this computer a couple years ago, and the one it has now is 64-bit capable. I'm going to see if I can't drum up a 64-bit version of Win7 somehow, and I'll report back if I can and it changes this issue. It's probably a good idea to make the switch, regardless.

So yes, upgrading to Win7 x64 was the answer. My 9800 GT installed perfectly, updated the drivers, and automatically set my display to it's native resolution. After doing a little more digging, it turns out that I'm not the only person who has had this problem. Apparently this was, and is, an issue with Win7 x86 and the 9800 GT that neither Nvidia or Microsoft ever could resolve. I assume it was because the GPU was already near the end of it's life cycle so it wasn't a priority.

Oh well, I'm happy now, and I have a 64-bit OS too!
