Periodically cursor arrow changes to fine vertical line. Often retrieve arrow by clicking here and there and moving back and forth but have have not found pattern. Use GridMove, a great utility for selecting positioning, but have turned off and it is not responsible. Running under Windows 7 Home Premium on Dell 546 with Integrated ATI Radeon HD3200. Both monitors are flat screen Dells, different models, different sizes. Ed
There must be an application running in the background that's responsible. Press Start > "Run". Type in "cmd". When the Command Prompt window shows up, type in "tasklist >> mytasks.log". Type this without the quotations. Now, you should see the "mytasks.log" file we've just created, here: "C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME". Upload that file to this forum. Later, we'll figure out which applications to kill.
Scorps65: Below is are the running programs and services. The problem admittedly reared a few months ago. Avast, WScheduler and PhoneTray were staples long before that. Firefox may have been installed about that same time but I would be dubious. A Google search did turn up reports of the possibly one pixel wide dotted vertical cursor but none ever resolved. I do doubt if my experience is unique. Hm, i would say to kill the PhoneTray app, but i stumbled across something interesting here. It seems as if its a problem with ATI Radeon. First, update your graphics card and use windows update. This might solve the issue. If it hasn't, many users claimed that a remedy was shutting down "ATI catalyst control panel".
One problem creates another. Cannot locate a driver for the ATI Radeon HD3200 which is an Integrated, on the board. Dell does not even show the driver for my 546 or even on the site. Google found but could not be sure those listed were for the Integrated. I am not a gamer, do a little digital photo retouching - the rest is all text so that is why accepted the plain pipe racks card that came with the model. Probably should just go out and purchase an inexpensive but newer card.
I'll try and locate it for you. Give me the service tag number, or, the exact model of your dell (546 ST,MT...)
You are too good and do appreciate. Model is Inspiron 546MT Purchased new from Dell August 2009 Service Tag: 9PCZCK1 Express Service Code: 21124500049 Video Card Integrated ATI Radeon HD3200 Graphics From Device Manager: Presently running an AIT Radeon HD3200 Graphics (Microsoft Corporation WDDM1.1) Drive Version 8.56.1.15 dated 4/24/2009 and signed by Microsoft Ed
Anything to get the problem solved partner! Well, it seems to me that your desktop has drivers for the HD3450, version 8.63, dated 8/19.2009. For some reason it states that its PCIe x16, but you mentioned that it is integrated. I think theres a mistake. Heres what i think you should do. Download the HD3450 driver from the website. Its aprox. 100mb so it'll take a while. Once downloaded, uninstall your current HD driver. Now, install the downloaded driver and restart. Lets hop this fixes the issue. And remember, if you can, disable the catalyst control panel from starting up.
It is definitely "Integrated," - the chip set in on the board, the output, an HDMI and a VGA15 pin on a panel above the slots and near the USB ports. It is not in a PCIex16 slot for which I do have one - empty. What does the "it" refer to in your statement "For some reason it states that its PCIex16, but....."
Cool. The "it" I was referring to was the driver. Install it anyway. I think they've made a mistake on their website.
I am with you, but obviously I do not pay enough attention to detail - download the driver from what web site?
Lol, i should have done this earlier: go here . Look under "video (6)" and click the blue download button near the "Radeon HD 4350, Radeon HD 3450...".
Hey, you have stuck with me and I apologize, but I have had it with Dell (and my last three have been Dell). As you found too that was probably mis-identified, but I figured give it a go - could always revert to the old. First time I did my own thing, ignoring their instruction to download to the desktop, and in my folder of choice found two files, one R226382.exe with 0 bites and a second R226382.exe.part with possibly 22,000. The "part" obviously would not run, the exe would not either (hey, it only had 0 bites). Then followed instruction and downloaded to Desktop. Icon pointed to the to the "part" file which of course would not run. Did a search and found another exe in my User file and ran - it unzipped to C:\Dell. Used Systems Device Mgr and elected to point to drivers which I did and it stated I was up to date. The Dell page states that it definitely is a later version number dated 9/19/2009 - five months newer. I'll solve that cursor problem later - but now have just decided it is time to buy a new card. So for a non gamer with two monitors I see some positive threads on the GeForce GT440 for only $60. It handles two monitors with outputs for DVI, HDMI and VGA. The last time I played a game was probably in the 80's (Pac Man). I probably should at least check out what I am missing and this card appears to handle entry level. Next computer I think I will build so that I have total control with access to the OEM for each component.
Yeah that's weird, the file size should be exactly 106mb. We can sort it out later as you say. Sure, that card is pretty good. Should handle recent games a high resolution and good quality, if you intend to play. Come back with more questions you may have about the new build!
Now that I know you guys exist plan to stay around and learn with you. Obviously a great place when I decide to build one. Many thanks, Ed
