Argh Troubleshooting PC

Here goes...

A few weeks ago after switching my pc off (which is a rare occurance) it wouldn't turn back on, it got to the boot screen and restarted itself. I run memtest86 which indicated no errors. So then I decided Id get a new PSU and I bought one (TBH Wether related to the problem or not I was in desperate need of a new PSU) and now when the pc is switched on it checks the RAM and just stops.....it won't let me press delete and go into my BIOS and it doesn't go any further.

Any ideas?

well you've either got a underpowered or bad PSU, what make & model is your new PSU ?[ot]i'd have thought a decent 300 - 350W PSU would do for your spec[/ot] either that or something is overheating, you could use Speedfan to help you track down any overheating

can you mail the seller and ask how old this PSU is[ot]tried looking on net but no luck[/ot]

:swear:, yeah forgot you can't boot:doh:, you can't even check temps in BIOS:doh:[ot]don't know another way to check temps, i'll just have a quick look on net[/ot]

Edit: BTW: does it ever reach POST ?, if so does it give any beep codes ?
what mobo do you have ?[ot]any error codes on a display on mobo or any LED indicators on mobo[/ot]
do you have a PCI POST test card[ot]long shot[/ot]
 
sorry for delay, had to go out 2day, right, lets take a step back and look @ the full picture
right lets assume the PSU is ok until we know more

:doh: are all fans clean and correctly fitted ? (remove and reattach to be sure)[ot]yes i do have a habit of overdiagnosing a problem[/ot]BTW: are you using any thermal compound (although newer HS / F come with thermal compound already attached)

Edit: can't find your mobo on asus's site, could you please try to find it, TIA

The guy said the age of it should be in the manual but I don't see it.

None of there fans were touched but I took them all off and reattached as advised

My brother built the pc so Im not sure I'll ask him next time I see him

check the copyright date, probably on the back of the manual or inside the front or back page

Hey there this kind of sounds like my problem I'm having with my newly built computer.....

Don't want to hi-jack the thread or anthing...


But I've got a new computer, when I boot it up everything seems to come on fine but the monitor takes ages to come on....

When it does the Asus graphics screen comes up then jumps to a black screen with writing about something (too short a time to get what it says) but it says press any key to continue.

Pressing the key just makes the screen go blank.....
Leaving it wthout pressing a key makes it go blank after 3 seconds....

So it's not coming up with BIOS or anything, very much like you're problem.


Perhaps they are both the same problem? :(

It does mention something about the HDD.....I've got two 320gb Sata's....

I removed them and it then goes to mention the DVD-RW instead...


Really strange, I've been having a lot of problems with my new computer.....(graphics card was broken on arrival, etc etc ( really is annoying me to be honest)

that's correct, check the boot priority in the BIOS for an explanation
@Nic & Extol are your HDD's detected
 
i've just PM'd Big B & Addis (cos B is offline) for their help[ot]as i think i'm over diagnosing the problem[/ot]
 
I'd try clearing CMOS by removing the battery by the following: shut the system off, unplug the cable from the wall to the PSU itself, then moving the CMOS jumper to the clear position and leave it like that for an hour.

i thought you just moved the jumper for 10 seconds then moving it back cleared or reset the BIOS
