Yeah you can there's team speak (press y and then type message) and public speak (press t then type message) but it won't be in an audio form, just a message on screen.

How are the maps for Wolfenstein put together?
Most of the maps are created by groups of individuals, rather then the game's original developers. Are they using special software to do it? Is it difficult to built a map, do you know?

Oh, okay. Strange, I tried hitting every key but didn't see any prompt to type in message popping up or anything. And by the way, I didn't mean audio form haha; by "hear" I actually meant "read" :P . My fault there ...

But it seemed strange how no one seemed to chat when I tried playing it. People are always chatting on BF1942

Maybe the server has chat disabled, I can't see any other reason, maybe check your options in the game to make sure there's nothing there which could be stopping you from seeing messages.
